Volunteers needed please
WAC reception, staffed by volunteers weekdays 9.30-5. Usually people do a half
day 9.30-1 or 1-5. Back up people are also needed to fill in when the regular is not
available. Answering phones and helping people who come in to WAC. .Good
listening skills are crucial as some people have needs that they initially find it hard to
express. WAC has been serving the community since 1972 and many people turn to
WAC in times of trouble. WAC tries to maintain literature about local sources of help
for a wide range of topics.. Help updating this information would also be valued.
.Volunteers on reception also need computer skills. Unfortunately WAC;s reputation
for helping people has spread over the decades so we get phone calls from all over
the country and when possible the Reception Volunteers identify a agency in their
area to which they can turn. Great patience is necessary!.
Barristers and Solicitors for Waterloo Legal Advice Service (WLAS) to advice
on Thursday evenings, WLAS has about 66 volunteers from the legal professions
who give their time in 2 teams, so each volunteers on alternate Thursday evenings.
To volunteer contact james.mcgregor@arrowmedia.com who is a senior member of
the volunteer team
Also a volunteer needed to help put tables and chairs out for WLAS (Thursdays
from 4.15 to 4.45 pm) ready for the legal advice sessions.
Also someone at a similar time on Tuesdays between the older people’s craft
groups and the evening sessions.
More volunteers are needed who are good at helping people use IT on computers
or smart phones. Day time especially Tuesday and Thursday pms but if you one or
two volunteers could come regularly each week at another time that could be
arranged. So many need this help.
Repairs and redecorations at WAC. As a very busy community centre WAC is
always in need of bits of painting, and repairs to furniture’s and premises.
Sometimes this is provided by teams on away days from businesses. However
individual volunteers also join our regular DIY worker, Johnny Walker, who can help
volunteers develop new skills while helping him at WAC.
Welfare benefits advice and related support for local older people and people with
disabilities. Volunteers with experience in this, or any aspect of this, are much
needed to help Valerie, the part-time paid worker, with the many people who need
help with advice or in completing forms or in preparing for tribunals.. Updating
training can be provided for those whose knowledge is rusty.
Mutual support – many of the day time activities at WAC involve people in
sharing skills eg sewing, crochet, knitting, art, board games singing More who would
enjoy sharing skills or learning them are welcome.
A couple of volunteers to accompany an local older person once a week (ideally
Tuesdays so she can see her friends and participate.)
Happy Bus Pass outings for many years these were run weekly from WAC.
Suspended at present because no one to organise them – requires one or two
volunteers to research places to go, which have free entry and can easily be reached
by public transport. From Waterloo. Much background info available on options
available in WAC because they have been run for so many years, although each
place would need checking and updating. Also need to accompany whoever opts to
come and help people get to know one another.
Some space is available for people/ groups to hire for their own activities See
www, waterlooactioncentre.co.uk for more info about Hall Hire or the many activities
at WAC
